Toggle bolts are the top choice when it comes to anchoring a freestanding cabinet to the drywall in the kitchen. Toggle bolts, when properly installed, can hold a cabinet suspended on the wall and above the floor — as long as the drywall is sufficiently strong. A toggle bolt consists of two parts: the machine bolt and the toggle, which resembles the wings of a bird or plane.

The "wings" of the toggle bolt are spring-loaded to make it easier to get it inside the wall because it compresses against the sides of the bolt. You can secure your freestanding cabinet to the wall in a few minutes using toggle bolts and the right tools. Measure 3 inches from the right wall inside the cabinet; then measure 3 inches down from the cabinet's top using the tape measure. Make a mark with the carpenter's pencil where these two measurements meet.

Repeat this for the other side of the cabinet. Transfer these measurements to the wall behind where the cabinet sits. Use the pencil to mark the measurement locations on the wall. Use the drill fitted with the right-sized bit to drill holes at each of the marks made on the wall. Clean the drilled holes of drywall debris. Stick the screwdriver into the hole and twist it around a bit without enlarging the hole.

This helps remove any stuck drywall debris. Drill the holes in the cabinet. If needed for thin-walled cabinets, use a sacrificial piece of wood held in place behind the cabinet as you drill through the cabinet into the block of wood.

This prevents the cabinet's wood from splitting as you drill. Push the cabinet against the wall and line up the drill holes on the wall with those of the cabinet. Take the wing-part of the toggle bolt between your thumb and forefinger, slightly compressing the wings together until you see the hole in the head through which you will thread the machine bolt. Thread the machine bolt partially into the toggle with your other hand. When you compress the wings of the toggle, they should be perpendicular to the screw.

Confirm the machine bolt is threaded far enough through the toggle to keep it from turning sideways against one wing or the other, but still has enough length to get the toggle wings and the majority of the bolt through the wall and cabinet. The toggle and the machine bolt insert through the hole in the cabinet and the wall until the toggle springs open on the inside of the drywall. When you tighten the machine bolt, the wings of the toggle pull flat against the inside of the wall as it keeps the machine bolt in place on the inside of the cabinet.

Compress the toggle wings together and insert the toggle and bolt through the hole in the cabinet. Use the hammer to slightly tap the head of the bolt until the toggle goes completely through the cabinet and the drywall. Pull the head of the bolt toward you to hold the toggle against the inside of the drywall. Use the screwdriver to tighten the machine bolt until the washer and the head of the bolt are secure against the inside of the cabinet. The right method for hanging your object depends on the type of wall you have and where you want to hang it.

There are several ways to approach this task, depending on whether your wall is plaster, drywall or brick. If you need to use a ladder, follow ladder safety guidelines, such as placing it on a solid, firm surface and always keeping three points of contact with the ladder, the National Safety Council recommends. If you need to use a drill, wear protective eyewear and gloves to help protect yourself from debris.

If your walls are made of plaster or drywall, one option is to affix the object to a spot on the wall directly into a stud. Studs can help support the weight of heavy objects. Studs are typically 16 inches apartmeasuring from the center of one stud to the center of the next, BobVila. This can help ensure that at least 2 inches of the screw are affixed into the stud. Unlike drywall screws, wood screws are not threaded all the way to the top, so they are a better option for drilling into wood, The Family Handyman says.

Then use the drill to affix the wood screw itself. The weight of the piece you would like to hang and the thickness of the wall will dictate the size of the toggle bolt you will need to use. According to DoItYourself.

You may want to use two toggle bolts for extra strength, Hunker. The wings of the bolt will be folded into the sides while the bolt is inserted into the wall. Once the bolt is inserted, the wings open up inside the wall to add stability. Use your fingers to tighten the bolt, then finish securing it with a screwdriver. On drywall, you may opt to use a picture-hanging hook. These fasteners come with their own nail and are strong if installed correctly into a stud, Popular Mechanics says.

To use it, insert the nail through the sleeve on the fastener. Hold it up to the wall where you want to hang the item, then use a hammer to tap the nail into the wall. These may hold up to 20 poundsaccording to This Old House, but be sure to check the package to confirm. These are made up of a screw fitted into a metal sleevePopular Mechanics says. If the anchor has a pointed tip, it can be simply hammered into the wall. As the screw is tightened, the outer metal sleeve expands into the wall, securing it in place.

While molly bolts can vary, they can typically hold between 10 and 50 pounds, This Old House notes. They recommend selecting bolts that are long enough to pass through the thickness of your drywall so it can expand properly. For us, we needed it out in order to begin on the flooring. We also have plans to build a custom sofa for the RVso ours needed to come out regardless. Almost every RV is different so please use what you can from below to complete your task, but understand that some steps may be different depending on your specific model.

Ratchet Set. Sure removing your sofa from your motorhome may seem like a simple task, and for the most part it is, but unfortunately for us, it took some disassembling first in order to fit out the door. This is why removing some of the items can prove to be a bit more challenging than originally anticipated. On top of that, nearly everything is bolted or screwed down for safety reasons when driving down the road. We brought up the question about how to remove the sofa from your RV in one of our RV Facebook groups to see if there was any other way to get the sleeper sofa out of our motorhome.

Having the sofa still attached to the floor may make it easier on you as far as removing the heel plate and arms. You only need to focus on the ones that attach it to the RV itself, as well as the ones that will remove the arms and front heel plate. First things first, you need to grab your ratchet and socket set. In order to remove the pullout sofa from your RV, you will need to have both a 14mm and 13mm socket though sofas could be different based on your coach, so best to bring the whole set.

After we had the tools we would need we folded the bed of the sofa out and leaned the sofa headrest as forward as it would go as highlighted in the picture below. At this point, I climbed right into where the bed portion of the sofa would generally be, then loosened all of the bolts.

With our sofa, this was the point where we needed the 14mm socket. After loosening all of the bolts that attached the sofa to the floor of the RV I climbed my way out trying not to scratch myself on the wire from the bed. This is the point when we realized the sofa had seat belts since they were hidden below the sofa. You can remove the seat belts by loosening the bolt on the floor then going to the storage compartment below and removing the nut the rest of the way.

When it came to removing the heel plate and arms from our sofa all of the bolts were 13mm meaning you should grab that 13mm socket, or whichever one fits for your sofa. With the bed still fully within the sofa, look down along the inside between the front of the hidden bed and the heel plate that sits inches further out.

There should be four bolts, two in each corner, you can tell they are for the heel plate by noticing they are the only ones that attach to it. Using your ratchet and 13mm socket, go ahead and remove all of the bolts.

Once removed the heel plate should easily lift up. Removing the arms is a bit trickier. I found it was easiest to have the sofa pulled out when performing this action. With every sofa more than likely being different, it is important that you pay close attention to what each bolt is attached too. You will see a ton of bolts because the metal frame of the bed is held together by them as well.

If you look in between where the sofa is attached to the wood of the arms you will see which bolts are attached and which are not. You will want to loosen and remove all bolts that connect to the wood of the arms. Now that you have the arms, heel plate, and seat belts removed you can take them to where you intend to store them.

Next, we focused on removing the backrest of the sofa.

Which is as simple as removing the nuts that hold it to the back of the hideaway bed. I hope your sofa fits out the door as-is, but if not I hope showing you the process of how we disassembled ours was helpful. They would be a lot more comfy for those nights when you watch a movie because of bad weather or just watching the news. I always make that mistake with the model number. Do you think it could be done? Hey Joan, thanks for reaching out.It may be necessary to bolt to concrete when securing a heavy piece of machinery to a concrete floor, building A bridge, or when doing foundation repairs.

There are many other uses specific to the type of bolt. The type of bolt you should use can be determined by the load it will bear as well as how and where it can be installed. A common type of concrete bolt is the cast-in-place anchor bolt. This is a threaded bolt that has been set in place and cast into a section of concrete, generally a building foundation or slab.

The bolt threads at the end of the steel rod protrude from the concrete, and a washer and nut are used to hold the object being secured in place. Cast-in-place anchors come in different shapes: L-bolt, J-bolt, pigtail anchor with a degree bend, or with a steel plate and hex nut. The anchor bolt has a stronghold because it is pre-cast, but it can be tricky to steady in wet concrete. It is usually used to tie walls to the foundation to make buildings more earthquake-proof. An epoxy bolt is used in existing concrete.

To install an epoxy bolta hole is drilled in the concrete, and the bolt is inserted along with an epoxy, which sets the bolt. Epoxy is actually stronger than the concrete it is set into. Epoxy bolts are ideal where there must be a close spacing of the anchors or they must be placed close to an edge where a typical anchor bolt would tend to blow out the concrete when hammered in.

These kinds of fasteners are anchored into existing concrete surfaces or structures. Instead of using epoxy, a high strength grout is used to secure the bolt. Grout has a few advantages over epoxy. It will not break down under high heat and it is easier to pump into the holes.

It does take longer to set up, and it is not quite as strong a bond as the epoxy. A wedge bolt is also used in a hardened concrete floor.

A hole is drilled in the concrete, and a wedge is inserted into the hole. Then, a bolt is inserted and screws into the wedge. The wedge tightens around the bolt, securing it. A concrete drop-in anchor is a steel expansion sheath that is tapered at the bottom and has a cone-shaped expander plug.

To install them, a hole is drilled, and the anchor is driven into the hole until it is flush with the concrete. Then, a special setting tool is used to expand the anchor. This anchor is used in light to heavy-duty applications. Bolts must be spaced along the floor or wall to distribute the load that will be attached to them.

Building codes typically dictate the spacing of those bolts. Anchor bolts are meant to be permanent once they are set in place so unless the concrete holding them is removed first they are not going anywhere. This can sometimes be problematic. For example, when moving heavy machinery in a factory, it can be difficult to move the machine without damaging the bolts.

In some instances, the old machine is making way for a new one with the same bolt pattern in the base, or another type of machine might be slated to be set there later on.

In many instances, those anchor bolts are crucial to the precise setting of specific machinery whose placement is governed down to micro-millimeters. They cannot be damaged because they cannot be replaced at any small cost.Brick walls are solid, load-bearing fixtures of your home.

When it comes time to remodel your home, these strong walls can seem like a hindrance. However, you can cover or add to a brick wall by securing a wooden frame to the existing brick, then connecting new material to the wooden frame. Whether you are adding siding or planning to add a room, bolting a wooden frame to your existing brick wall provides a starting point.

Measure the space on the wall where each wood stud will be placed. Cut the studs with a circular saw to the proper size. For best results, measure and cut each piece just before it is needed.

Coat the wide side of a 2-byinch wood stud with construction adhesive that is approved for bonding wood to masonry material, such as brick. Press this stud horizontally along the bottom of the brick wall as a base for the vertical studs to be added. Make sure the stud is level. Make adjustments before the adhesive forms a tight bond. Attach a top plate consisting of one or two wood studs with construction adhesive.

Consult your local building codes to determine whether two wood studs are necessary. Check that they are level before the wood bonds to the brick wall. Position vertical studs into place, wide side against the wall, with construction adhesive. Place studs at both the left and right edges of the wall.

Fill in the space with studs placed every 16 inches on center. The vertical studs should be cut for a snug fit between the base plate and top plate. Ensure all studs are level and squared. Drill pilot holes with a masonry drill bit through the wood and into the brick for the cement anchors.

The pilot holes should be the same diameter as the anchor sleeves. Clear debris from the hole with a wire brush or compressed air. Wear safety goggles. Attach the cement sleeve anchors according to the manufacturer's instructions. Tighten all bolts with a wrench.

Thomas Ferraioli began writing in His work has been featured in national publications like "Parents" and "U. By Thomas Ferraioli. Related Articles. Connect anchors as you drill the pilot holes. If all the pilot holes are drilled first, there is a chance the wood can shift, causing the holes not to line up properly. To keep the vertical studs in place while drilling, toenail the studs with a few nails for extra support at the base and top plate. Stagger the position of the anchors left and right as you place them along the studs.

If they run in a continuous straight line, the stud may split.Whether you're using a plastic wall anchor, a molly bolt or any other type of wall anchor, you'll need to drill a hole in the wall, and the size of the hole is critical to the proper functioning of the anchor. If it's too small, the anchor won't fit, and if the hole is too large, it won't hold. Apart from that, there's no challenge to inserting a wall anchor, as long as you use one that will support the weight you plan to put on it.

Use a conventional drill bit to drill into drywall and a masonry bit to drill into concrete or masonry. Drill a hole into concrete that is deeper than the anchor is long. If you're drilling into drywall, drill all the way through it. Push the anchor in as far as it will go. If you drilled the right size hole, you won't be able to get it all the way in without tapping it with a hammer. When the anchor is fully inserted, the front edge of the lip should be flush with the wall.

Unscrew the bolt from the sleeve of a molly bolt or toggle bolt. Plastic wing anchors don't have bolts attached to them. Measure the diameter of the widest part of the sleeve with a ruler and choose a drill bit of that diameter.

When measuring toggle bolts and wing bolts, be sure the wings are folded up parallel to the sleeve before you measure.

How to Properly Insert an Anchor Into a Wall

Drill the hole for the sleeve all the way through the drywall. These types of anchors aren't suitable for concrete or brick walls. Insert the sleeve into the hole as far as it will go and tap it with a hammer until the front edge of the opening is flush with the wall.

Molly bolts and toggle bolt sleeves have barbs under the front lip that dig into the drywall to hold the sleeve in place.

How to Hang Heavy Objects on a Wall

Screw the bolt that came with the molly bolt or toggle bolt into the sleeve or screw a wood screw into a plastic wing anchor. As you tighten the bolt or screw, the wings will expand against the back of the drywall or, in the case of a molly bolt, the sleeve will expand against the sides of the hole to hold the bolt in place.

Wall anchors are rated for weight. Toggle bolts and molly bolts can hold the most weight while conical anchors hold the least. Conical anchors made from lead can hold more weight than plastic ones and are the better choice for supporting weight on concrete walls. Never rely on a conical anchor to support a heavy load on drywall.

This week, the USGA have made the decision to revert to a traditional US Open venue after a few years of breaking the mould. In 2013, they returned to the logistically challenging Merion Golf Club (after a 32 year absence) while in 2015, it was the brand-new venue of Chambers Bay.

The total yardage will vary over the four days with a maximum length of 7,900 yards - a daunting number at first glance. Only designed in 2006, the course is a bit of an unknown entity having yet to host a PGA Tour event, though it did stage the 2011 US Amateur. Mike Davis, Executive Director of the USGA, is the man in charge of setting up US Open courses and below is his summary of Erin Hills and what unique properties we should be looking out for.

The Wisconsin course is a windswept property which provides a firm playing surface that plays shorter than its length on the scorecard. The one area in which the bombers will have an advantage, is the four par 5s, which all measure over 600 yards and offer the best opportunity for scoring.

How to Anchor a Freestanding Cabinet to Drywall in the Kitchen

It is worth keeping an eye on the weather as Mother Nature will no doubt have a role to play this week, as the wind can blow from any direction. As a result, the fairways are generous in width, especially compared to normal US Open tracks like Oakmont, Pebble Beach and Winged Foot.

However, the wind is not its only defence with contoured fairways making for very few flat lies and several semi-blind and blind shots. These bunkers surround many of the greens, along with shaved run-off areas.

Rather than seeing players chipping out of thick rough if they miss the dance floor, they will instead be left with a choice of putting, playing a bump and run or pitching. The only US Open course in recent memory that was reminiscent of this was Pinehurst no. They will be slick surfaces that run true with many raised or multi-tiered.

In summary, superior ball-striking skills will be rewarded this week, particularly for those who drive the ball well from the tee. Shot-making ability, playing well in the wind and liking firm surfaces are all a plus and an imaginative short-game will be crucial.

Being long certainly looks to be an advantage but not essential, although Driving Distance stats will be far more important than Driving Accuracy over the week.
