Sqa verification and validation

Validation is the quality assurance process SQA uses to ensure all new and revised qualifications are valid, credible and fit for purpose. It is sometimes referred to as subject validation. With the exception of Graded Units, all other Units making up a Group Award are validated through a series of quality checks prior to the validation of the Group Award. Graded Units relate to the principal aims of the Group Award so their validation is addressed as part of the Group Award validation.

Group Award validation focuses on the justification for, and coherence and technical specification of a proposed qualification but also checks the proposal against a set of criteria 30 KB designed to ensure that SQA provision is fit for purpose.

The validation method used by SQA is determined by various factors including specialism, size and structure. As a general rule one of the following methods will be used:. Centres with devolved authority for validating Group Awards decide on the validation method to be used. Where a meeting of subject experts is chosen, the centre are responsible for hosting the validation meeting and all associated costs.

As we said at the beginning of this document, these guidelines apply where SQA manages the validation process, ie where a centre does not have devolved authority for the validation of SQA qualifications.

Centres with devolved authority for the validation of Group Awards have full responsibility for validation using their own systems.

Any questions or comments should be sent to The formal definitions that are used within this article are:- Software Quality Assurance The function of software quality that assures that the standards, processes, and procedures are appropriate for the project and are correctly implemented.

Software Quality Control The function of software quality that checks that the project follows its standards, processes, and procedures, and that the project produces the required internal and external deliverable products. CMMI A process improvement approach to software development. Everyone in a software development organization takes part in both the CMMI processes and any improvement initiatives for those processes. SQA would also establish software metrics in order to measure the effectiveness of this process.

A common metric for measuring the Requirements process would be the number of errors found during system testing that could be traced to inaccurate or ambiguous requirements note: SQC would perform the actual system testing but SQA would collect the metrics for monitoring and continuous improvement. Verification of the requirements would involve inspection reading and looking for clarity and completeness.

Note there is a subtle difference between SQA and SQC with regard to standards, SQC's role is in verifying the output of this process that is the Requirement document itself while SQA's role is to make sure the process including the use of the appropriate standard is followed correctly. The product requirements e. Supportability, Adaptability and Reliability etc. The respective roles of SQC and SQA is the same for all types of requirement customer and product with SQC focusing on the 'internal deliverable' and SQA focusing on the process of how the internal deliverable is produced, as per the formal definition.

This process involves version control of the Requirements and the relationship between the Requirements and other work products. One tool used in Requirements Management is a Traceability Matrix. The Traceability Matrix maps where in the Software a given requirement is implemented, it is a kind of cross reference table.

The traceability matrix also maps which test case will verify a given requirement. SQA role To observe audit that documented standards, processes, and procedures are followed. SQA would also establish metrics in order to measure the effectiveness of this process. A common metric for measuring the Requirements Management would be the how many times the wrong Version was referenced. Another measure for the Traceability Matrix would be lack of test coverage, that is defects detected in the shipped product that were not tested due to the fact that they were not referenced in the Traceability matrix that referenced the requirements.

Traceability Matrix from this process and verify that all requirements were traced to a program or code reference. Solutions, designs, and implementations encompass products, product components, and product-related life-cycle processes either singly or in combinations as appropriate. This is the main Design and Coding processes. CMMI puts the design and build together. Other important processes, e.

Clearly testing the end product against the requirements which is itself a SQC activity will reveal any defects introduced during this the Technical solution process.

This metric is usually further quantified by some form of scope, for example defects per lines of code, or per function. The finished product does not have to be present before testing can begin.During this exceptionally difficult time, we are continuing to work hard on a number of scenarios to support you and your learners, including alternative arrangements for the certification of our qualifications and awards.

We will update you on these arrangements as soon as we can. In the meantime, we are making a change to our Candidate Evidence Retention policy. Our policy currently asks SQA approved centres to keep all candidate evidence for three weeks beyond the qualification completion date or unless contacted by an External Verifier.

As of Monday 23 Marchwe require that all centres must keep candidate evidence for six months after the resulting date of each qualification. We hope this extended time will allow us to complete the necessary external verification once travel and movement restrictions have been relaxed. We appreciate that this may present you with some challenges, but we believe it is the fairest way to ensure candidates are being assessed to the appropriate national standards.

Our teams are still available to discuss any specific questions you may have, and our Quality team will be able to help explain the steps you will need to take to support alternative certification once that information is available. If you require to speak to our Quality team, please email qav sqa.

Please be assured that everyone here at SQA is fully committed to working with you to deliver for learners at this exceptionally difficult time. Thank you for your patience and continued co-operation.

The unit developer normally develops unit tests during the development of the unit itself. What we do is extend the developed unit tests with verification techniques uncommon to the majority of developers. System testing — System testing is a verification technique that aims to verify that a software satisfies its functional and non-functional such as performance, security, maintainability, failover and recovery etc.

Regression testing — Regression testing is a selective retesting of a system or a component, which is aimed to verify that recent modifications have not caused unintended effects, and that the system or component still works as specified. Regression test scenarios emphasize breadth more than depth and all components of the software system are briefly tested.

Acceptance testing — Acceptance testing is both a verification and validation technique that aims to verify that the product satisfies all contractual requirements and to finally validate that the product fulfills its intended use when placed in its production environment. In validation aspect, the acceptance testing is very similar to the software joint reviews only that acceptance testing would typically involve the system end-users operating the system in its production environment using the available user documentation.

Need Help!Internal verification is an approach to quality assurance based on peer support and review that enables you to integrate quality into internal assessment from start to finish. Internal verification in the senior phase builds on your experience of 3—15 moderation in the broad general education, with many similar elements.

The Sharing Standards and Expectations pages on the Education Scotland website provide more information on this. The model of internal verification used is at the discretion of the centre.

The approach to internal verification that you choose needs to work within the context of your own centre. We recommend that you read through Sections 2 to 4 for guidance before you consider the self-assessment. The internal verification toolkit allows you to think about the activities you undertake at each of these stages. While most internal verification activity will be integrated within existing processes, it is important that key activities are documented.

Primarily, this will support you in managing internal assessment and verification and planning for improvement, but will also allow you to demonstrate to SQA that an effective internal verification system is in place. The internal verification toolkit provides you with templates that can be used to successfully support an effective internal verification process.
